Reference news network reported on September 26, according to the German news agency Brussels reported on September 25, the sale of microplastics in various areas of the European Union will be gradually banned.
According to the new regulation of the European Commission, the sale of microplastics themselves and products with microplastics added and released during use will be banned in the future. The authorities in Brussels have issued a notice. Microplastics are synthetic polymers less than 5 mm in diameter that are difficult to degrade. These particles accumulate in animals, including fish and shellfish, and can therefore enter human food.
The new rules aim to prevent about 500,000 tonnes of microplastics from entering the environment. The European Commission says particulate material on artificial turf playing fields and other sports facilities is the biggest source of microplastics released and therefore causes environmental problems. The ban imposed an eight-year transition period on such facilities to "allow stadium owners and operators time to switch to alternatives."
Products that are used in industrial sites or do not release microplastics during use are said to be excluded from the ban. However, manufacturers of these products must provide instructions on how to use and dispose of the products to avoid releasing microplastics. There are also specific exemptions for medicines, food and feed.
